Part 2 of 3 -  "Why Do You Love Me?" -  A New Kind of Handler

Ahri knew that if she stayed she would die, whether her death would be the result of heart-break or literally, physically killed by her handlers... she also knew that if she tried to leave again, she would die, either from the elements and trying to survive by herself in the mountains or by her handlers if caught. Since death was immanent, Ahri decided that day she was ok with death, it would be better than her life and so she began starting saving small amounts of food and water and was preparing to run away for real.

One of the other young ladies saw what Ahri was doing and reported her to their handlers and that was the day that Ahri knew she was going to die.  The cruel soldier beat her, dragged her out of the house and into the courtyard, and began spewing hatred and evil  He set out to steal any remaining dignity she had, he attempted to kill any spirit she continued to muster, and he hoped to destroy any hope of ever having a "normal" life.  After yelling statements about her disobedience, he proceeded to remind her and others that women don’t even need to actually disobey their husbands to earn being beaten. They only have to fear or assume that she will disobey and he or any other Muslim men then have the  right to beat women based on their own wisdom.  Ahri learned that day, that men are to be feared and their wisdom is cruel, evil, and unjust.

He charged her with being an infidel and made a declaration that she earned the death sentence by displeasing Allah and the leaders of the community.  He had two other soldiers pick up a metal pipe they were each given turns to beat her. And finally, they decided to make her a true example to other girls who might dare choose thoughts, words, or actions they deemed rebellious.  Her final punishment to ensure she would no longer be a ‘nuisance’ was to douse her with oil and set her on fire.  Ahri learned that day that hell on earth is possible, but that it is possible for torture to end.  Other’s couldn’t help her, even if they wanted to or they would have been in trouble themselves.  Ahri moved herself on the ground until the fire was gone, along with much of her skin. With open wounds and a “fuzzy” mind, Ahri somehow made her way outside the courtyard area and away from others.  She doesn’t know how long she slept, but was startled by a caravan that she assumed would simply go pasted her, but they stopped.  This was a group of others that were making their way to the border, Ahri realized they were trying to help her, it was a confusing moment as no one  had helped her, considered her, and were rarely kind to her.  This group had mothers and aunts that wanted to care for her wounds and Ahri learned that day, that some people care still care about others.

Walking towards the boarder the group made arrangements with a man they had to pay to take them across the border.  Again, with a “fuzzy” mind, Ahri didn’t remember much of what was happening around her, but she does remember thinking that these people were trying to help her, even though she was probably going to die.  Ahri wasn’t able to do much, but she was thankful that her pain had turned dull and subsided, in fact, she didn’t feel much.  Ahri learned that day that pain can get so bad that it eventually makes you numb, the very thought brought her hope.  It's almost like it doesn’t bother you anymore and almost goes away.  Ahri began thinking about her family, her sister, her school, her poetry, and even remembered her dreams of being a teacher.  Her captures were no longer around her, taunting her, so they couldn’t hurt her for wanting those things, so she decided to want them again, even if she only had a few days to enjoy them before dying.  Ahri doesn’t remember how she got there, but she realized she was wrapped in blankets and in the back of a moving and bumpy truck, for what seemed like days.  Ahri had no idea where she was, but as she looked up, she could see the tall “clean” beautiful buildings, almost dream-like.   When the truck finally stopped, several people in funny white and blue clothes came together and picked her up. She heard them speaking, but had no idea what they were saying, Ahri had never heard Turkmen before.  She didn’t know if they were going to be kind or cruel, but Ahri learned that day, that even when she doesn’t understand the language or the plan that is happening around her, she hoped, maybe they would be kind, she didn’t dare hope, but it seemed like they might even want to help her.  One of the women in white and blue gave her a shot in her arm, it created a funny taste in her mouth and then she remembers not being able to keep her eyes open and quickly fell asleep.  The next thing Ahri remembers is waking up days later in a bed, in a room, and with a beautiful, chubby women whom she quickly realized was now her ‘handler.’   But this handler was different than the men and women she had been ‘surviving’ the past several years.  This new handler made eye-contact and said, “I love you, Ahri.”  But Ahri didn’t know this stranger, didn’t trust this stranger, nor could she really talk as she couldn’t move her jaw, but she understood the new handler’s name was “Helga.”  What a funny name, “Helga.”  It was hard to say and even though she spoke Pashton with Ahri, it was with an accent that she later learned was German.

Over the course of time Helga would tell her, “I love you Ahri” several times a day. It was almost annoying, but kind of reminded Ahri of her beloved Aunt Fatima.  As days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, Ahri came to understand that this “handler” was kind, she might actually love her, she said it enough!  Helga seemed to want protect and care for Ahri, almost as her own child or a niece.  Ahri watched Helga speak with the hospital personnel, she would speak with her boss Director Lincoln from Paris on the phone, and Helga often spoke up to protect Ahri and sometimes just to help bring her comfort. She was being cared for, truly.  Her wounds were being treated, she was being fed, and she was too tired to try and ask questions most of the time, but Ahri listened to everything.  This guardian not only spoke to her, but about her and into her heart.  Helga never once tried to hurt hurt, make her work, or even spoke harsh to her.  Helga would read stories and letters to Ahri about Isa.  Helga would read things like, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Ahri didn’t understand most of what Helga would read and when she did, it sounded more like a fairy-tale.  One day, Ahri turned and asked Helga, “Why do you say you love me?”  Helga replied, “My precious Ahri, I love you because Isa loves me.  He loves you too, but because he loves me, I am compelled to love you!  Isa said, “As I have loved you, you must love one another” and in John 15:9 He said, “As the Father has loved me so have, I loved you.”” God is good Ahri, I know man has been cruel, but God is loving.  He loves you so much he sent men with a truck to pick you up and bring you here.  He loves you so much, He sent me from Germany to come stay with you.  He loves you so much, He has made a way to help bring you medical care that will save your precious and important life.

Ahri and Helga had many conversations that brought her hope.  They have had many conversations that were hard too. For many months Helga would read Ahri stories about Isa and they would talk about God together and Helga would talk to God about everything.

Ahri knew that Helga and her team were working to get her out of the situation she was in and to make a new country named France her home.  Ahri fully understood that her body was badly burned and her lungs and heart were damaged.  She needed to get to France so doctors could help give her surgeries that would help her move, breath, and have a body that could be more active.  Ahri understood from those conversations that she had to choose to live, choose to get better, choose to believe she could get better.  This desire and will to live would help Ahri survive the next 9 months while waiting to get the help she needed.  Helga was on the phone with her Director Lincoln and told Ahri that they had a plan and the paperwork and money needed to help get Ahri to France had already started. Lincoln told Helga that there were hundreds of people praying for Ahri and as Ahri heard this, she couldn’t understand why they would want a stranger they had never met to get to better.  Helga explained to Ahri that most of the people helping her were followers of Isa and they too were loved by Isa and as such, “they are compelled to love you Ahri!”  Remember, Isa said, “As I have loved you, you must love one another” and in John 15:9 He said, “As the Father has loved me so have, I loved you.” “My friends and family who know Isa love you and Director Lincoln’s friends and family who know Isa love you, because Isa loves us. And Isa loves you too Ahri, that’s why he sent us to you!  Isa wants you to know Him and to be healed on the inside and on the outside!  He has a plan and it’s a good one for you!  You can hope because He has a future for you!

Ahri and Helga knew that Ahri couldn’t leave the hospital until her recent infection subsided.  Ahri battles constant infections from her skin, to the lungs in her chest, and some that we don’t know why they exist, but they come and they try to kill Ahri. But, Ahri understood that she wanted to live, so she chooses to be strong everyday because she is curious about this future that Isa has promised her.
